    Meze Advar.
Unboxing. Very nice decorative box which well protects the contents. Upon opening the shells are displayed in a black velvet covered foam tray, which lifts out to reveal the hard-shelled travel case, and a booklet, which to be honest I haven’t looked at so something you can check out when you buy the set! Inside the case there is the MMCX cable (adequate), a set of Final Type E tips (great) and a rather excellent tool for releasing your MMCX cable from the shells. The shells themselves are stunning, black and bronze design, and have a good weight even though they are small in size. To get a good seal I had to use the ML tips rather than my usual M size.
Sound? I’m 68year-old rocker who has spent too many misspent nights at loud concerts! I listen to melodic hard rock, metal & Berlin style electronic (Tangerine Dream etc.) and I try to find IEMs that cater for that style of music. OK I’ll admit it, I’m a bit of a ‘basshead’; I do like a good bass thump. Which brings me round to the Advars. When I first plugged these in and went to my usual ‘test tracks’ I found them to be a bit thin and lacking in that thump that I like. Anyway, I swapped out the cable for a 4.4mm plug (Kinera Leyding) and as mentioned earlier changed the tip size to better the seal, plugged into my iFi Zen amp and increased the gain and WOW. Give these a bit of power and the bass is all there; not overpowering like some sets but certainly present when required. The mids are well represented, but it has to be said the treble is about as bright as I personally can tolerate, being a bit sensitive to high pitched sounds. I’m sure most of you readers will think they are light and airy though, and as everybody’s ears are different, I won’t argue. I should also mention that because of the small shell size, the Advars are one of the most comfortable IEMs I have ever bought.
Good value for money? Again, relative I guess. After 6 hours of listening to music and a film (the latest Spiderman in 4K) I’m well pleased with my purchase. I’m told that they improve with use and should have a 50 hr ‘burn-in’ to start really getting the best from them. Thanks to Richard at Audiologica for the excellent service as usual.

These were recommended by Richard. They are excellent quality in-ear headphones. These are solid little units that fit comfortably in my ears. They sound great; an amazingly big sound from such small units.
